YCW School News - February-May 2008

The recently enacted Jeffrey Johnston Stand Up for All Students Act  states that bullying or harassment of any student or school employee is prohibited during any education program or activity conducted by a public K-12 educational institution; or during any school-related or school-sponsored program or activity or on a school bus of a public K-12 educational institution. Among other points, the act also states that each public school should instill a procedure in providing instructions to students, parents, school administrators, counseling staff and school volunteers on identifying, prevention, and responding to bullying and harassment. Youth Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County instructs student and school personnel on Bullying Prevention on an annual basis. Youth Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County at this juncture for the present school year has already conducted 24 Bullying Prevention presentations/assemblies serving 2,412 students in the Miami-Dade schools.

Silver Bluff Elementary’s YCW school program (club) coordinated their school’s Red Ribbon Week campaign (October 23-31). Various activities were coordinated by the Silver Bluff Elementary YCW Club on a daily basis including: Red Ribbon Week activity booklet distribution in the classrooms, Red Ribbon Week History presentations during morning announcements, Stranger Danger Safety Quiz presentations, Gun Safety presentations during morning announcements, Red Ribbon Week lessons during science class, Word of the Week related to Red Ribbon Week, “Wear Red T-Shirt” Day, and Red Ribbon school decorations. All of this culminated with YCW of Miami-Dade conducting school-wide Red Ribbon Week (Drug Prevention) Assemblies including McGruff the Crime Dog on Friday, October 31 . Silver Bluff Elementary’s YCW School Program continues to excel in educating students on crime prevention. YCW School Advisor Leila Germroth and her YCW student members are deserving of praise and recognition for their superlative efforts.

Dr. Michael Krop Senior High School’s YCW program (club), titled “Crime Educators”, is off to a startling start for the present school year on coordinating numerous Crime Prevention campaigns, activities, and services.  They once again coordinated “The Clothesline Project” at the school. The project addresses the issue of violence. It is a vehicle for people affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a shirt. They then hang the shirt on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of violence. It also brings awareness to the issue. Members of YCW Crime Educators worked very hard to decorate the shirts and put up the display. They also encouraged their peers to read the newspaper articles about domestic violence next to the Clothesline Project for classroom discussions and awareness purposes. The YCW Crime Educators have also participated in various community service endeavors such as a Toy Drive and a Community Cleanup. They also coordinated for guest speakers to conduct presentations on various topics such as gang prevention and self-esteem. YCW of Miami-Dade conducted a YCW Introduction (Reporting Crimes) Presentation at one of their club meetings and provided YCW educational packets for each student member. The YCW Crime Educators are in the process of planning a school-wide Seatbelt Safety campaign. YCW of Miami-Dade County provided them the seatbelt safety educational materials for the campaign. The YCW Crime Educators were also featured in the Miami Herald Neighbors’ School Scene section. Undoubtedly, YCW School Advisor Kim Ferreira and her YCW Crime Educators delegation are instrumental representatives in educating the Krop Senior High student & faculty population on crime prevention & school safety.

Pine Villa Elementary has implemented a full-fledged YCW school program (club) for the first time in the school’s history. YCW School Advisors Ann Cantens and Dianne Arthur have been working diligently on the implementation process. YCW of Miami-Dade County conducted a YCW Advisor Training with Ms. Cantens and Ms. Arthur and they quickly followed-up  by recruiting students and coordinating safety education events. YCW of Miami-Dade County conducted a YCW Introduction (Reporting Crimes) Presentation at the First Organizational Club Meeting and provided the student members their YCW educational packets. The students which successfully adhered to the program (club) requirements were recognized at the school’s YCW Installation Assembly. The student members were provided laminated YCW Student I.D’s including a picture of Office McGruff that were creatively produced by Ms. Cantens & Ms. Arthur. YCW of Miami-Dade County also conducted school-wide Bullying Prevention Assemblies. Way to go Pine Villa!
